20 teams, 140 riders
Organisers of the Tour de Hongrie expect about 20 teams participating in the Hungarian race, among them they count with 20 Hungarian cyclists who will be able to be at the start of the event on 14 August in Siófok, Hungary.
This year Tour de Hongrie, Hungary’s biggest cycling race, will be held between 14-19 August. During the six days, according to the plans, about 20 teams will compete. Every team can enter seven riders. So, this means, the number of the participants of the UCI 2.1 category race can reach the 140 people. In this case, the participation of the event is going to be 40% higher than last year.
„We received applications from about 40 teams, so twice as much as we are able to accept – said Laszlo Szilasi, Race Director of the Tour de Hongrie. – We have been working a lot and doing our very best when we selected those teams that received invitation, we went through on several important criterias. Pro Continental teams had priority as they have the most spectacular, big and precious technique, infrastructure and power. Then next ones were those teams that are important for the Hungarian cycling, the LOC of the Tour de Hongrie is trying to support the national aims as much as they can, in a fair way. So we invited teams that also invite Hungarian cycling teams for their own UCI races. The 3rd point was: to fill in the start list with strong Continental teams.
” Regarding the invitations, Hungarian cyclists had priority. As it was written previously, Tour de Hongrie is going to be a 2.1 category UCI event, so the race received higher classification than ever before. This progress also means change as well. In a race like this, only Continental (or stronger) teams are able to participate. Last year Hungary did not have this kind of team, but now, the country is having two of them.
„Two Hungarian Continental teams are going to compete, based on the information we have, Pannon Cycling Team will have seven, the Kőbánya Cycling Team will have three Hungarian riders racing in the Tour de Hongrie. We also received the entry of the team of Hungarian Cycling Federation too, which means, we can support seven further Hungarians. Besides that, Peter Kusztor and Janos Pelikan will be part of the Austrian team, Mybike, and Balazs Rozsa from Differdange, we expect 20 Hungarian cyclists at the start” – continued Laszlo Szilasi.
It also must be mentioned that in the Team Novak from Csikszereda (Romania) there will be further Hungarians (living beyond the borders).
Pannon Cycling Team
Regarding the chances, probably the top 3 team with the highest classifications will dominate.
„The Hungarian route, the circumstances are definitely not similar to the Alps, we do not have truly high mountains, however the route still have some surprises which can be unpleasant. For example during the stage in Balaton there is going to be 1300m difference. Sprinters of the professional teams can make these hills, little mountains. So, those teams who are going to have really good sprinters in the Tour de Hongrie may control the race easier. What is certain: the Italian Androni-Sidermec-Bottecchia will arrive to Hungary with the most race kilometres behind them, this team competes in the Giro d’ Italia in May. They have a brilliant young and talented sprinter, Matteo Malucelli, who is having 3700km in races and ten Top 10 UCI places. We do not know the exact start list of the team Androni yet, but if Malucelli is going to be part of their team, we already have a favorite for the plain stages…”
From the invited and confirmed teams now we can present ninteen: three Pro-Continental, thirteen Continental and three national teams.
