World Tour teams in the peloton
In the more than nine-decade history of Tour de Hongrie the official route was presented in a spectacular gala for the second time: this unique gala was held in the Budapest Music Center, in the heart of the Hungarian capital. Hungary’s biggest cycling race will start on 13 May from Debrecen, the peloton is going to compete for 5 days, via 7 counties, on 861 km. The finish will be in Esztergom.
Karoly Eisenkrammer, President of the Organizing Committee of Tour de Hongrie, said: in the background organizing team has been working hard for months, regarding the route they had to consider several aspects, the most important one was: to visit those parts of Hungary where the Giro d’Italia will not be.
Most of the stages are going to be held in the Northern and Eastern part of the country, in numbers: 7 counties, 20 cities (4 are county-capitals) and further 55 villages. The first three etapes basically will be flat ones, so sprinters are going to have huge chance to take the victories.
Stage 4 will end on the highest point of Hungary, on Hungary’s highest mountain, Kékes with a spectacular sprint. This day will have key role regarding the final results and general classification. Stage 5, last day is going to be in the Pilis which is such a favourite route for professionals and amateurs too. Start and finish is city of Esztergom, after four rounds across the hills and mountains of Pilis, climbing Dobogókő.
Karoly Eisenkrammer added: this year is the first season of UCI’s Pro Series races. This is the new series and LOC hopes that Tour de Hongrie can be added to Pro Series races in the very close future. There are really serious and strict rules and regulations if a race would like to become a Pro Series competition. The first criteria is that at least fourteen World Tour or Pro Continental teams should take part in the race. The Giro’s Grande Partenza in Hungary has already opened several doors and world’s strongest teams are having their eyes on Tour de Hongrie. In this case, we get a huge chance to fulfill this above-mentioned criteria.
In the meantime, what also really important is that all these world-class teams should collect great experience, it is essential if we would like to welcome back all of them in the coming years. We are going to do everything we can to satisfy our teams and give them all the services they need.
David Szekely, Director of Hungary’s national sport channel, M4 Sport, spoke about the TV broadcast and live coverage. The race can be watched and followed live on M4 Sport this year as well, then Eurosport is going to stream a 1-hour highlights after every stage. Thanks to the collaboration between LOC and organiser of the Tour de France, Amaury Sport Organisation, in 2020 Tour de Hongrie can be followed in more than 150 countries, all around the world.
This year each team will have 7 riders again, so 140 cyclists will attend our race. Until this moment, organizers has announced the participation of 16 teams so far.
