On 12 May, Wednesday, Siófok will host the Grand Depart of the 42nd edition of Tour de Hongrie. Stage 1 starts from the „Capital of Summer” and ends in the capital of Somogyország, in Kaposvár which was built on seven hills. Peloton stays two days nearby the famous and popular vacation destination, „Hungarian Sea”, Lake Balaton, as on 13 May riders will travel from the North coast, the beautiful destination, Balatonfüred, to the greenest city of Hungary, Nagykanizsa.

The race is turning to North then, when Stage 3 is taking place between the „City of Queens” and „City of Living Water” – from Veszprém to Tata. On Stage 4 we will be able to say it’s the big one, the mountain etape, when peloton will reach Hungary’s highest point in Gyöngyös-Kékestető, after a start from Balassagyarmat, City of the Bravests. The stage includes more than 3000 m of elevation gain. Stage 4 can be the day of the mountain kings.

Final stage will take place in the beautiful part of Budapest, with the start on the Andrássy Avenue which looks like definitely as Paris’ Champs-Elysées, then riders compete around the amazing City Park (Városliget) and the Puskas Arena, one of the venues of the UEFA EURO 2021. Stage 5 includes 12 laps for the international peloton in the heart of Budapest.

About COVID-situation in Hungary

At the moment Hungary is the best distributed country by vaccine doses in European Union and the vaccination goes well too. Thanks to it, the Government decided to gradually release the restrictions: schools, restaurants and the other parts of life will start again in few weeks.

Right after Tour de Hongrie, some matches of European Football Championship are organised in Budapest with fans. Until then Hungary will be the host for other international sport events too. The organisation of Tour de Hongrie goes undisturbed and we are preparing for the event in the original dates (12 – 16 May) and as our original plans.

Of course we do as much precautionary measures as possible in order of safety of the riders and organisers. We have more measures than UCI requires. Every organiser will be tested before the event and those (organisers, hotel staff), who will be close to the teams, will be tested every day as well. We really hope to keep up the team bubble just like last year’s edition, and will be able to organise Tour de Hongrie this May with safety and without any positive test results.
